Job Title: Development Officer (Museum Education and Outreach)
Location: Northern Ireland Museums Council Office, Holywood
Hours: 37 hours per week
Hourly Rate: £16.80 per hour
Duration: Up Until 31 March 2023
The overall purpose of this job is to strengthen the reputation and capacity of local museums as centres of learning and education. A specific emphasis will be to assist local museums to maintain and improve their standards across community-based learning, whole-life and inter-generational learning, working with ‘hard to reach’ communities, as well as curricular-based educational activity and outreach.
Main Duties
1. Contribute to the development of policies and strategies in relation to the NIMC’s ongoing work and the development of the museum sector.
2. Provide advice and support to NIMC members on educational and learning matters, especially in relation to the requirements of the Museum Accreditation Scheme.
3. Plan, coordinate and undertake research focused on museum learning and education.
4. Plan and deliver specific projects concerning the advancement of education and learning across the museum sector.
5. Secure the resources to deliver grant and project work.
6. Devise and deliver a training programme that will strengthen the professional development of the staff and volunteers working in the museum sector.
7. To maintain an up-to-date information resource on all aspects of the operation and practice of education and learning in the museum sector and disseminate such information as is required by way of reports, presentations and other forms of digital media.
8. Liaise with other professional bodies and organisations by way of informing and developing museum education and learning services.
9. Maintain, develop and promote the NIMC website as a resource for museum education and learning.
10. Provide support and input in the research and preparation of written reports for the Board, and for other publications.
11. To contribute to the effective and efficient operation of NIMC and its other programmes, including representing NIMC at meetings, as required.
12. Any other appropriate duties as requested by the Director.
Essential Criteria:
1. A degree or equivalent or higher level qualification in a relevant subject and at least two years working experience in education and/or community-based learning (which includes, but is not restricted to, whole-life and inter-generational learning, and working with ‘hard to reach’ communities) gained within the last five years
OR
2. At least five years’ working experience in education and/or community-based learning (which includes, but is not restricted to, whole-life and inter-generational learning, and working with ‘hard to reach’ communities) gained within the last eight years
Excellent organisational skills, the ability to work on their own initiative, and a pro-active approach to achieving goals.
Information technology literate, including a good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel or equivalent.
Experience of working with internal and external stakeholders to achieve service objectives
