First its important to prepare for common interview questions. These questions usually include naming strengths, weaknesses, past experience and be prepared to tell them about yourself! If asked about your weaknesses, try to turn it into a positive, such as “I have strong attention to detail, therefore I can often spend too much time on one project, but since then I’ve learnt to manage my time efficiently but still benefit as my attention to detail still stands.”
Practice! As the old saying goes, “Practice makes perfect”. This also applies to interviews, if you practice over potential questions, you will feel more relaxed throughout the process. The best way to do this is to get a friend or family member to ask you potential questions, ensuring you speak out loud.
Dress appropriately. Remember this is your first impression. Plan ahead of the interview what you’re planning on wearing, whether it be smart or smart casual. Ensure the outfit is comfortable on you. Try it on previous to the interview to ensure you look comfortable as the process can be stressful enough.
Make your selling points clear. Why should the employer choose you over other applicants for the job? Make these points clear to the employer by reinforcing them again and again.
Don’t be afraid of the “tell me about yourself” question. Interviews often don’t last too long. This is an opportunity to stand out from the crowd. tell the interviewer about your hobbies, career goals and why you want this job.
As a question at the end of the interview. Ensure this is a positive question such as, “When will I hear back about the job?” or “Will feedback be available from this interview?” This leaves a positive impression with the interviewer.
